Like most Canadian kids that grow up playing hockey, I had dreams of one day playing in the National Hockey League. And by age 15, I was well on my way, playing AAA, the highest level in able-bodied hockey for my age my Ontario Hockey League draft year.
However, following a leg injury in a hockey tournament, it was discovered and diagnosed that I had Spindle Cell Sarcoma. A cancer similar to Terry's and as a result, my left leg would have to be amputated to save my life.
Terry Fox, both the man and his legacy, was one of my primary inspirations of perserverance during this time, and his story enabled me to recover and rebuild my sense of self, and aspire to achieve new goals and dreams.
Now, a 2x Paralympian and World Championship Gold medalist, I am Team Captain of Canada’s National Sledge Hockey team, and recognized as one of the sport’s best in the world, with hopes of leading Canada to Paralympic Gold in 2022!
