Personal Message

It is inevitable; cancer will effect your life. 1 in 2 Canadians will get cancer in their lifetime. 1 in 4 will die. 3 of every 10 deaths in Canada are caused by cancer. 4 of every 10 diagnosed cancer cases are preventable.

Flip a coin, the probability of it landing on "heads" is in 1 in 2, 50%, just like your odds of getting cancer. Statistically speaking, if it is not you getting cancer, it is someone you love very much.

Cancer has been a significant part of my life as friends and family have fought, healed, suffered, and died from this disease. Last year, someone very precious to me was diagnosed with brain cancer after having beaten breast cancer the previous year. Although they prefer to remain anonymous in this campaign, it is in their honour. They were an immeasurable support to me in a very painful time of life. They clothed me, sheltered me, fed me, and loved me at my worst. I owe them the world.

A side effect of cancer being in my life has been my motivation to share my hair with those who do not have it. Over the years I have donated my hair four times to be made for a wig, this head shave will be my fifth donation (Donations will be made to Locks of Love). During High School I became very ill and lost a good portion of my hair. I do not know the struggle of cancer but I know the humiliation and anxiety of hair loss. I would love to meet the girl who is going to get a wig from my hair and to tell her that she deserves it much more than I do. I would love to show the world that hair is not what makes you beautiful and it does define who you are. My beauty is in my heart. Hair is a privilege and I am blessed to have it and to be able to give it away.

I chose the Terry Fox foundation due to the their financial integrity and work to perpetuate Terry’s Marathon of Hope. Terry Fox was 22, the same age as I am now, when he died. He has always been a personal hero of mine. His tenacity and motivation inspires me to take on this challenge. He raised millions of dollars for cancer research motivated by his dream of a cure, certainly I can raise half a million in his honour and in honour of my loved ones.

Contribute to the research that could save your life. Contribute to the research that could save your loved ones life.

My goal is simple: to raise half a million dollars for cancer research and spread awareness of cancer and its prevention. On March 20, 2020, I will shave my head when I achieve this goal.

If each person in Canada gives $1, we can raise nearly 38 million dollars, 76 times what I am attempting to achieve.

Surely, you are worth $1. Surely, your loved ones are worth $1.

Invest in cancer research; invest in a hope for your future. I implore everyone to donate, skip a coffee, save your life!

I encourage anyone who is brave and willing to donate your hair for cancer patient wigs or shave your head in awareness and support. Together, on March 20, 2020, let’s trade our Hair 4 Hope.

Sincerely,
Esther
